Using military registers – an under-used archival source – this article explores the necessity of integrating peoples’ social dimensions with their athletic and community group engagements in early 20th century France, aspects that the historiography of sport has not addressed with any great seriousness. In so doing, the lengthy and fastidious task of compiling data on athletes opens the way for the exploration of methodological issues and pathways for pursuing a genuine social history of sport.
