This article uses the notion of passing to analyze the practices of class boundary transgression by the “ établi·es” during and following 1968. First, we document the incorporated dispositions, the social conditions and the political context that made this voluntary social demotion, or reverse passing, possible. Then, we describe the various challenges and social representations that are involved in achieving a successful établissement. By emphasizing the performative effort necessary to “pass as a worker”, the theoretical framework of passing allows us to underline the procedural and relational dimensions of établissement. In return, the latter sheds light on the multiple uses behind passing, ranging from acceptance to contestation of the established order, whether it be social, sexual, racial or gender-based.
