The Catholic Hierarchy and the Principles of National Revolution

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2005. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Like a new Solon, Marshal P?tain wanted to lay the foundations of the French State on new principles. These were taken from positivism as interpreted by the club Redressement fran?ais (French Resurgence), which was created by the French technocrat Ernest Mercier. Out of concern for unanimity, the Head of State asked the bishops' opinion on the "Principes de la Communaut?" (Principles of Community?a document that was meant to replace the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen under the Vichy r?gime). Mgr Chollet wrote a criticism of this text on January 14?21, 1941 in which he criticized the positivism which neglected the individual in favor of society. He highlighted the risk of contamination by Nazi ideology. On the other hand, he wrongly believed that the text's positivism was inspired by Charles Maurras, and that the content of "Principes de la Communaut?" strayed from Marshal Petain's profoundly-held views. The Holy See and the French bishops worked in vain to have the rights of the individual included in this declaration of principle.
