Thinking Together: An Ethical Question

The two authors plead for a different approach to collective discussions within the Gestalt community. They identify and discuss several obstacles to avoid: that of isolation wherein the individual sees or is seen as independent from his or her environment or context; that of insisting upon individual responsibility without taking into consideration the situation in which the individual is embedded; that of making an interpretation which binds the person to an image that has been attributed to her or him; and that of being part of a community – having a sense of membership which is too enclosed and hinders the individual from differentiating him or herself from the community. The authors conclude with the hope that the very same attitude one expects therapists to have with their clients – that of a dialogue – would be put into use among themselves.
