In the course of the First World War, in the island of Reunion, an increase was seen in the xenophobia shown toward the Asian community. An analysis of public opinion in the township of St Joseph in November 1915 reveals the ill feeling of a population beset by social and economic difficulties. Asians became known as ??Huns??, a collective subconscious turning them into the common enemy.
