This paper describes a new gestalt model of diagnosis and intervention with groups. It distinguishes between synchronic criteria (observing the here-and-now of the group) and diachronic criteria (the evolution of the contact intentionality of its members). This paper identifies five phases in this second set of criteria: process of becoming a group, the group identity, the shift from old certainties to trust in the new, group intimacy, and the ability to part ways.
