The fighting that took place on the borders and in southern Algeria has often been overshadowed. The purpose was to prevent the infiltration into Algeria of National Liberation Army (NLA) fighters and weapons from Morocco and Tunisia. The border dams were an important element in the Algerian War, especially on the frontier with Tunisia. The French military command sought by all means—and this cost France dearly—to prevent the rebels from outside from providing aid to those inside.
