The military history of the Algerian War attests to the difficulty of commanders in adapting to a new type of conflict: guerrilla warfare and terrorism. It was necessary to this end to modify Army structures and tactical concepts. Troop strength increased significantly, and strategy changed to tight control. Salan toughened military action, because faced with the guerrillas a subversive war was needed.
