This article draws on the reflections shared by those receiving and providing care in the health and social sectors. The reflective approach of the participants is twofold. First, they embarked on a conceptual exploration of the notion of autonomy. The aim of this was to acquire a shared understanding of this concept to shed greater light on the sheer breadth of people’s experiences. Second, the participants gave accounts of their daily experiences, which revealed the difficulties they faced on a daily basis. Something that poses no problem for the majority of the population can become immensely challenging for those with a disability. This article highlights what professionals sometimes end up forgetting in the midst of their own constraints. Moreover, it reveals what many patients are reluctant to express. The key is that we remain attentive to those who are different from us. As part of this commitment, we must also respect common law.
