Mistreatment of elderly people: Professional tensions between protection and the respect for human rights

The article discusses the mistreatment of elderly people and the official measures put in place to address this social phenomenon that impacts their mental and physical health. Due to its complexity, social work professionals often have to resort to concerted and collaborative work with other participants for the protection of the elderly, such as the concerted intervention process (CIP). The CIPs allow for timely, coordinated, and complementary actions from government health, social service, justice and public safety departments and agencies. Four cases are illustrated by providing guidance and information on the type of abuse perpetrated.
