On the one hand, we know that psychotrauma has the ability to upend people’s lives and, on the other, we meet people who refuse to accept help. Between theory and practice, between courses on support interviews and the reality on the ground that tests our convictions, there is a whole world of possibilities, calling for a professional stance and a time frame that remain adaptable and at our professional discretion. However, when workloads pile up and drastic action is needed, such an approach can prove complex. The fact remains that all the emotional baggage and burdens that clutter our waiting rooms are an important part of social support, and it would be a shame to leave them at the door.
