The États généraux de la bioéthique has just concluded, following six months of consultations and discussions, in the context of a revision of legislation scheduled for this year. The États généraux aim to better identify French citizens’ expectations while encouraging them to grasp the complexity of the ethical issues related to medical innovations. We asked two philosophers to conduct the first reviews of the États généraux, and what they reveal are contrasts: signs of a vitality in democratic debate for one reviewer (Jean-Philippe Pierron), and something that poses diversionary risks capable of backfiring on democracy for the other (Paul Valadier).
