The Catholic Church is facing a serious crisis. However, it could see this crisis as an opportunity, in so far as it raises the central question of sexual love for human beings, and therefore questions the economics of the impulses that underlie it. It is likely that the Catholic Church’s response to this crisis—which concerns love and sex in all their dimensions, and not just in terms of abuse and violence—will depend on the way in which its message will affect future generations. We are living in a time that is conducive to the unleashing of impulses, and therefore need to examine Freud’s concept of repressing impulses.
