Investigation of the inclusive potential of technologies in a context of intensive teleworking: Between rules, tools, and actors

Drawing upon an exploratory and longitudinal (three stages) study carried out during the pandemic, this paper examines to what extent a context characterized by an absence of shared physical spaces as well as an extreme dependence on ICTs constitutes a challenge for employees’ inclusion. Following a comprehensive approach to the socio-material dynamics at work, we look at the very dynamic taking place between virtual spaces (materialization), the rules governing the use of tools (elicitation), and the actual uses of tools (sense-making). Our findings show first an opportunity for inclusion of remote employees, before observing phenomena of dis-inclusion and exclusion. In turn, our contributions are twofold. First, we observe a phenomenon of dis-inclusion as a temporary strategy of disinvestment from the collective. Second, we discuss the inclusive potential of ICTs though the lens of social dynamics around the tools.
