North Korea is known for having supposedly eradicated all religious practice. Indeed, the major traditional religions, namely Buddhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism, are almost gone. However, this is not true of other, more ancient religions. For various reasons, the country is seeing a resurgence in shamanism: a religion in which women play a pivotal role.
