Fit, fun… forever young? The physical activities of ageing women

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The issues addressed in this paper are the place and role of physical activities for ageing women. The social and cultural aspects of sports allow us to pay attention to the effects of gender inequality and social division. This paper shows that involvement in physical activities offers different ways of becoming aware of and/or fighting against the effects of ageing. The research data were collected using a biographical approach over several years with ten women who had various sporting experiences. But all of them have maintained physical activity. The women’s accounts reveal how women manage their physical activities over time as their relationship with their bodies and their health changes. We also see how the women respond to representations of age within gender norms and in the broader social context in which they operate. Our reflections make explicit the contribution of physical activity in older women’s attitudes to ageing and their lived experience.
