The expression by certain patients of a strong collective desire to anticipate the end of life have encouraged the government to pass laws to protect patients’ rights. This article, written by several authors, questions the meaning of this strong desire for anticipation: Is it about precaution, planning, or an attempt to gain control? The authors broach this matter in terms of the elderly: Does growing old change the perception of sickness and death? Does anticipation enable “better aging” by reducing the uncertainty inherent in human life? This article ends on a practical consideration about this topic: Anticipation for whom, why, and how?
