The loneliness of the dying in the time of Covid-19

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2022. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The Covid-19 global pandemic has impacted several vulnerable populations, including older people. In fact, many Covid-19 victims were identified, among others, in the residential care centers EHPAD (France) or CHSLD (Quebec). Although the virus kills mostly older people, it has also drawn attention to contemporary representations of death. In this article, we revisited the book The Loneliness of the Dying by Norbert Elias to explore different social transformations operating during the COVID-19 period. Specifically, the person’s longevity, the progress of medical science, the pacification of Western societies, and finally the significant growth of the individualization phenomenon have all been strongly shaken by the global crisis. It is necessary to reflect on the sanitary actions used to fight the virus, and in particular on how to live and die in the time of Covid-19.
