Psychiatric care adapted for the aging population of Réunion

Réunion, a French overseas territory located more than 9,000 km away from mainland France, will have to face a significant demographic challenge as its elderly population is set to double by 2050, and its population aged 75 and older will triple. This challenge is particularly complex in Réunion because its older population has more medical comorbidities, earlier loss of autonomy, and greater financial insecurity. However, the territory has certain strengths, and innovate solutions are being developed. The Intersectoral Geriatric Psychiatry Unit of the South Réunion University Hospital is one of them. By taking into account the specificities of the territory and its population, the unit offers tailor-made psychiatric care to meet the needs of its geriatric population with a global, comprehensive, and systemic approach, taking into account family caregivers.
