“Fraternity” can refer to the most insular, combative circles, as well as the most open and peaceful. After a brief golden age during the 1848 Revolution in France, when the republican motto was enshrined, the concept in now in decline. Too irenic for some, too suggestive of family and biology for others, fraternity is becoming obsolete, even suspect. Alexandre de Vitry considers the conditions for its return in the twenty-first century, at a time when old solidarities everywhere are breaking down.
