(Being) mindful: A critical review of the concept

In recent years, meditative practices, particularly “mindfulness” techniques, have experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity. They are now being applied in businesses, education, and even the military. This meditation hype, which has given rise to a number of misconceptions, has also been met with a series of critiques. This article examines the main criticisms and proposes ways to address them. It notably addresses the challenges in defining meditation and mindfulness, as well as the methodological issues that impact the interpretation of research results. The article also discusses the misconception of meditation as a cure-all and its use as a way of escaping life’s difficulties. Furthermore, it explores the potential adverse effects of meditative practices and tackles the ethical questions surrounding the commodification of meditation and its relations to social justice.
