The most frequent representations of the European public opinion regarding the division between Turkish Euro-lovers and Euro-sceptics oppose on the one hand laics, progressives and liberals who would be in favor of the adherence of Turkey to the European Union (EU), and on the other hand Islamics, more or less openly opposed to it. In reality, more than divisions, they are interpretations of different ideas that the Turkish have of a state-nation, sovereignty and devolution of parcels of this sovereignty towards a higher authority, the EU. From this point of view, Islamism also becomes an affirmation of the national identity and an essential addition to nationalism.
