Planning the Great Istanbul, between Global Geopolitical Ambition and Local Real Estate Stakes: The Third Bridge on the Bosporus
Type de matériel :
74
The building of the third bridge on the Bosporus highlights challenges faced by the metropolis. Facilitating the crossing between Europe and Asia, it serves the international ambitions of the Turkish government, which would like to turn Istanbul into a flagship city. The new infrastructure is an urban planning tool of the Great Istanbul. At a local scale, in addition to solving congestion problems, it creates new opportunities for real estate by offering new highway accesses to suburban areas. Nevertheless, it constitutes a threat for the environment, especially for forests and water resources, and also for some of the poorest of Istanbul society. Some NGOs have started denouncing these threats. The third bridge questions the local geopolitics of the party that is governing both at the national and municipal level.
