The maritime space of the Gulf mirrors the power plays in the region. The US still prevails as the unrivaled naval hegemon while the French and the British remain influential actors. But if these Western powers are still active, the navies of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s members and of Iran are developing as well. Finally, Asian powers are more and more deploying military means in the Gulf as a result of their increased economic relations with the area, although it does not yet qualify for a strategic rapprochement.
