The British Referendum to Leave the European Union and its Consequences

The British voters’decision to leave the European Union in the referendum on the 23rd of June 2016 raises a number of questions related to the British political and economic situation as well as more generally to the future of the EU. This article examines the reasons why David Cameron failed to convince the voters to stay in the EU and the difficult position in which his successor, Theresa May, now finds herself as she starts negotiating Brexit. Finally, it looks at potential consequences for the EU as a whole.
