Relations between Morocco and Algeria are experiencing new tensions because of the video of the Moroccan consul. These new tensions shed light on the historic rivalry between the two countries, which dates back to their independence. Tensions which have been exacerbated by the Sahara issue and the border issue, which have been closed since 1994. Two issues which constitute two stumbling blocks in relations between Rabat and Algiers. The recent tensions thus intervene against the backdrop of regional and continental rivalry, pushing the two countries towards an arms race. Tensions which block any hope of dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, which face enormous economic and security challenges.
