Academic profession have considerably change in a few decade : in addition to teach and research, there are now many administrative and representative activities. The profession still divided in hierarchies, status and disciplines with differents practices and values ; this does not contribute to a common identity. As duties are only a number of lessons to do in a year, everybody work very differently according to disposition, discipline, status, sexe, age... Loss of prestige for intellectual professions is more crucial for French academics because there are, outside of Universities, great research bodies (CNRS, INSERM...) and prestigious schools (“Grandes Écoles”).
