Criticism encumbered by ratings: Loft Story, a French remake of Big Brother

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2003. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The French television program “Loft Story”, which broadcasted in spring 2001, can be interpreted as the ultimate illustration of the drive towards rating in television. We propose to show that the broadcasters arranged an ‘industrialization’ of the rating and orchestrated a reaction by critics. Industrialization of the rating in the sense that all the methods previously established were used here to maximize the number of the televiewers and to optimize the exposure of advertisements. And more particularly their orchestration of a reaction by critics, which was illustrated in the abundancy of the voices rising to discuss the social connotations of this “reality television” program. This not only masked the financial purpose of the program but also contributed to its success.
