If the French language has a long history, the history of Francophonie is brief. The word itself makes its appearance only in 1880 and is widely used starting from the 1960s. Since its origin up to the present day it carries several meanings: a mere data of linguistic demography, a collective will of organization, a humanistic ideal of dialogue and solidarity. The affirmation of an international Francophony was first associative; the political construction, begun with the birth of Agency of cultural and technical cooperation (ACCT) in 1970, followed by the first Summit in 1986, and the creation of OIF in 1997 with a Secretary General who is the spokesperson in the concert of nations.
