Three traditions mark the short history of the economics of information. The first one regards information as a collective good with original properties. The second one analyzes the incentive mechanisms revealing private information. The third one considers the phenomena of power related to the detention of information and to the position of actors in complex communication networks. Recent developments of the economics of information are concerned at the same time with economic and social dynamics involved in production, diffusion, access, and appropriation of information, and with the institutional mechanisms controlling these dynamics.
