This article discusses the conditions under which the institutionalization of a “lingua franca” in the European Union would be effective and fair. The focus is threefold: the choice of a “lingua franca” (a natural or an artificial language?); the dominance of English and the means to render this linguistic “fait accompli” fair for speakers and language communities; a discussion on the feasibility of multilingual coordination policies.
