In this paper, we look at the way migrants and individual members of cultural minorities actually use the communication tools available in the new digital environment, and more specifically the mobile phones and Internet tools that allow them to set up group conversations and build up social networks via social media sites. We first question the sociological nature of so-called “digital communities,” before describing the actual experiences of migrants who use these digital tools to stay almost continuously in touch with their close relatives over long distances. Finally, through the use of these new methods of communication, we look into the question of cultural diasporas in the digital age.
