Television as a Meeting Place for Black Minorities in France

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2008. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In France, ethnic minorities, especially those of non-European origin (African, French Caribbean, North African, and Asian) are liable to experience discrimination, stigma, and exclusion. Television, in acting as a “meeting place,” is an important issue for those populations. However, TV programs often seem to marginalize these “visible minorities,” not only by allowing them little airtime, but also because the images they reflect are often caricatured and negatively connotated. Our qualitative survey of 43 people of African and French Caribbean origin shows that ethnic minorities are liable to react defensively or by using identity-building strategies in order to bridge the gap between their generally negative social identity and their personal identity (the way they define themselves), using the media as a resource for action.
