Although religions are also being affected by globalization, their internal differences have not disappeared, and religious affiliation has remained one factor of identity among others. Nevertheless, with globalization, religions are able to mobilize opinions more easily around common causes across the world. The influence of Western models is still strong, but other sources and other players have become more assertive. A global “belief market” is emerging, albeit with varying consequences in different parts of the world. Given this context, evangelization and the propagation of religious beliefs can become a source of tension. Religious and political leaders are both expressing interest in the potential contribution of religions to international stability. However, they must also deal with identity-driven reactions based on or associated with religious beliefs. For religious groups, globalization is bringing both opportunities and dangers.
