Contrary to much-repeated opinion, the Algerian war has often been evoked and portrayed in films, even before it came to an end. Brimming with emotion, rejection, politics and sensitivity, films that deal with the Algerian war, having first ignored the Algerians themselves—the “native population” —have developed a varied palette that draws richly on memories of a cruel war whose legacy is still very much present.
