In this paper are discussed the Romanian translations of three extracts from a press conference given by Jacques Chirac and published in the Romanian daily newspapers on the occasion of the “mini-crisis” over Iraq, when several East European countries (including Romania) aligned themselves on the American positions. The translators were the authors of the editorials where the translations were included: being unable to harmonize their double allegiance, they were unfaithful to the source text.Pulled in two different directions, on one side the fidelity to the source text and on the other the desire to satisfy their readership and the political direction of the newspaper they work for, such (pseudo-)translators end up betraying the ethics of their profession.
