This article uses examples of linguistic borrowings from Arabic to French to bring out the permeability of linguistic frontiers. Linguistic borrowings have always played a crucial role in bringing people together; they are travellers who do not need visas or passports to cross borders. They are not a symptom of linguistic contamination, as some language purists may argue, but of the vitality and dynamism of languages.
