The Great Wall of China, built to keep out the “barbarians,” is both a myth and a reality. No longer just a barrier, it has multiple meanings and has come to symbolize China. Centuries later, the Chinese regime has reverted to type by building another wall to contain the Internet, with five component parts: technical control, legal regulation, social pressures, national companies and, finally, influence on the international scene.
