The function of encyclopedic document classification systems is to represent socially recognized forms of knowledge. As both ideological products and producers of ideology, these sign languages are involved in the legitimation of identity models. The appearance of gender in documentary categorizations of people shows how these languages, because they configure the content of information in a particular direction, set down—or lay down—a particular frame of thought.
