Although it is the first of the arts, architecture cannot be confined to art alone, because it differs from all other arts essentially in its multidisciplinary paradigms, its vast scale, its functionality and other scientific factors that the architect Louis Kahn refers to as “orders.” Because of its symbolic and iconic value and the communication it prompts, architecture has become a central feature of globalization and even a focus of clashes between civilizations. It has become a vehicle for globalized imagery and intercultural messages and because of this, it can no longer be purely a function of the creative impulse or of the ego of international “starchitects.” Hence the need for regulation, for constant reappraisals and for investigations into multidisciplinary issues that only scholarly research can address. As regards the integration of architecture into the bachelor-master-doctorate system, this is hampered by the absence of communication between rigid managerial systems and the fears of those responsible for arts teaching.
