When should a liver biopsy be carried out?

In patients with recent liver blood test abnormalities, a diagnosis is based primarily on the analysis of their medical history and a biological assessment. A liver biopsy is rarely indicated. In cases of persistent liver blood test abnormalities, the challenge lies in diagnosing cirrhosis. A liver biopsy is usually unnecessary here. By contrast, a liver biopsy remains indicated when a rare cause is suspected, especially in the absence of causal factors for cirrhosis.
