On the surface, the "Nayemont massacre" seems to provide a good illustration of the brutality prevalent in the Early Modern era, and a proof of the high level of violence of the period. By studying all the relevant facts in the Bruyères prévôté, we contextualize what was a singular event. Focusing on two trials of thieves and the overall sentencing activity over a year results in the raw violence of the population becoming less obvious, and in the reassessment of the legal violence at the time.
