The 2018 documentary Police Killing [Auto de Resistência], directed by Lula Carvalho and Natasha Neri, depicts the ambiguity in the narratives of the deaths of many poor, black teenagers in Brazil. The police claim to have acted in self-defense, while the parents accuse them of having tampered with crime scenes in order to create a case against the victims. The images shared on the Internet support the families’ accounts. The aim of this article is to grasp how cinematographic dramaturgy appropriates these images and exposes the policies of racial and social segregation at work in this country.
