Reassessing the intellectual and political evolution of Jean-Baptiste Dubois as well as the transformations undergone by the Feuille du cultivateur, in which he played a preeminent part from 1788 to 1802, allows us to reconceptualize the role of the agronomical press in the context, first of the «agricultural Enlightenment» of the 1780s, then of the «agricultural republicanism» of the French Republic under the Directoire. From 1790 on, this publication, originally conceived as a tool of diffusion of agronomical progress, was turned into a propaganda sheet, aiming at first at generating a political consensus, and in later years used to spread the republican image of the citizen-farmer. The latter model was supposed to open the way to both the winding up of the Terror and the construction of a prosperous and pacified republic.
