Textual markers of erudition have developed over the course of the centuries, and the advent of the digital has led them to be transposed, which does not constitute a complete renewal. As we move towards Web 3.0, it is reasonable to examine the issues that the hypertext has raised in the worlds of digital scholarship, in particular those connected with the publication and dissemination of science. The successive layers of “code” that underpin the Web as a medium for writing and reading end up in forming a real palimpsest of information, which may or may not be visible to the end reader. The very existence of such strata of codified forms reshapes practices and uses, whether mundane or erudite. It is worthwhile to decipher the tension that exists between them and the renewal of scientific, social, and communication challenges.
