Establishing acommunication: Rhetorical and pragmatic aspects of Europe’s Russian media ban

The ban on Russian media in Europe, which was intended to support democracy in Ukraine, stands in contrast with the importance that democracies place on freedom of information, including partisan viewpoints. However, an examination of Europe’s major French-language daily newspapers shows that this discrepancy has hardly been mentioned, much less debated. The lack of response to the ban could be explained by the convergence of several factors, in particular cognitive ones, which represent a growing challenge for public debate.
