By linking nature and culture, a consubstantiality is established between caminante and camino, between the traveler and the path that is traveled. Examples of this are found in Japan, where tradition holds that hikyaku couriers, the “flying feet” who were once charged with delivering mail between Edo (Tokyo), Kyoto, and Namba (Osaka), would amble when they walked, moving and gesturing in a manner specific to Tōkaidō, the “Eastern sea road.” Japan is thought of as a “culture of the path,” one of the most remarkable expressions of which is the “walking gardens” of the Edo period, such as Kōraku-en.
