Nordic satire shaken by the globalisation of communication

In Scandinavia, satire has never been a source of major controversy, because it has long been more consensual than in the rest of Europe. The Mohammed cartoon crisis in 2005 was as much a surprise as a wake-up call: it was unthinkable that harmless cartoons in a small Danish newspaper could have provoked such brutal reactions in other parts of the world. Since then, Scandinavian satire has taken a new turn and taken on a new dimension: more political and critical of politicians, particularly foreign powers, it has now found its way into the heart of diplomatic crises.
