Making do. . .

No military logistics, no matter how sophisticated, can satisfy the combatant’s body’s every need in any place and at any time. Even today, small units in advanced positions may find themselves truly devoid of everything. This is where NCOs have experience, knowing that they have to know how to “make do” and “sort it out,” like in the image of a small combatant economy that is able, despite scarcity, to bring soldiers relative comfort and, especially, consolation. This ability of the military corps to make do is not just a utilitarian function. It is one that binds members together, for, in one way or another, everyone plays a part. This is a source of collective pride and mobilization.
