Henri Bergson and Charles Péguy considered heroism, mysticism, and action alongside one another. For today’s readers, it makes us think that heroism has given way to anti-heroism. The former acts through the virtue of a creative feeling that is communicated as an appeal. The latter, which shuts devotion and sacrifice away in the cupboard of outdated truths, enables incredulity and suspicion to justify inaction.
